Ritual

My little boy turned six last week and I was struck by the subtle rituals surrounding the occasion. He chose the restaurant and got to order whatever he wanted. He planned a birthday party and couldn't sleep the night before as he anticipated an amazing day of fun. And at the end of the party, he was surrounded by his friends and family, the lights were dimmed, and a glowing cake was set before him. I watched his face in the candlelight that glowed a bit brighter than last year. He silently listened to the children sing and I could see the satisfaction in his eyes. "Are you one?" No. "Are you two?" No. "Are you three?" No. "Are you four?" No. "Are you five?" No. "Are you six?" Yes, I am. I am six. He thinks that six is so big, but of course I know that he is still very, very small. But as his mom, I am thankful for a simple ritual to mark the occasion. Praise the Lord for six years with this precious boy.
