Swaddled
When my son was a newborn, he had a hard time falling asleep because he had a habit of hitting himself in the face. He would swing his chubby little arms around and just whack himself over and over again. I think he wanted to suck his thumb, but he lacked the coordination necessary to actually get his thumb into his mouth. He tried so hard to comfort himself, but his efforts were in vain. At these times, the only thing that brought him comfort was a swaddling blanket. When he was swaddled his arms were wrapped so tightly by his sides that he couldn’t move them any more. He finally relaxed, comforted by the tight hold of the swaddling blanket.Do you struggle to find comfort? I desperately search for comfort, hoping to find it in food or drink, entertainment or relationships. When I finally realize that my search is in vain, I lay my arms down at my sides and relax in the tight hold of my creator. It is only then that I find rest, surrounded securely by the love of God.As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore. (Psalm 125:2)
