The Earth is the Lord’s

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants too.Because God is the one who established it on the seas; God set it firmly on the waters.” (Psalm 24:1-2, CEB)We think it’s all ours. Don’t we?Our lives, our homes,our carsour citiesour kids...Our opinions and plans and decisions and potential. They are all ours.We started this thing and we’re going to end it. Right?Sure, we believe in God. A God who’s out there. Maybe watching. Maybe paying attention. Maybe shaking a divine head in frustration. Or shaking a divine finger in reprimand. Or maybe even holding out divine hands in welcome. But pretty far off. Pretty much somewhere out there, in heaven or space or somewhere that is truly not here.But faith, faith that is authentically Christian anyway, leads us to a God who is not far away at all. A God who is truly here. And not simply present, but invested. The psalmist says that everything is, in fact,  God’s. The earth and everything in it. Our lives and our homes and our cars and our cities and our kids. Our opinions and our plans and our decisions and our potential. All are God’s.Because, God is God and we are not. “Hallelujah” for that!We’re not the center of the universe. We didn’t this whole thing and we don’t have to figure out how to end it.Our call is to walk in faith, trusting in to the one who was, and is, and is to come.
